Modpacks bundle dozens or even hundreds of mods into one ready-to-play package. Instead of downloading mods one by one, you install a modpack and everything is configured for you — mod versions, configs, resource packs, and shader settings.
This guide covers the three most popular ways to install modpacks: the CurseForge App, the Modrinth App, and Prism Launcher.
What You Need
- Minecraft Java Edition (purchased)
- A modpack launcher (we'll install one below)
- At least 4-8 GB of RAM available (modpacks are heavier than single mods)
Method 1: CurseForge App (Easiest)
CurseForge hosts the largest collection of Minecraft modpacks. Their app handles everything automatically.
Step 1: Download CurseForge App
- Go to curseforge.com/download/app
- Download and install the CurseForge App
- Open the app and select Minecraft
Step 2: Browse and Install a Modpack
- Click "Browse Modpacks"
- Search for a modpack or browse popular ones
- Click "Install" on the modpack you want
- Wait for the download to complete — the app installs Forge/Fabric/NeoForge, all mods, and configs automatically
Step 3: Play
- Click "Play" on the installed modpack
- The Minecraft Launcher opens with the correct profile selected
- Click Play in the launcher
Method 2: Modrinth App
Modrinth is a newer platform with a clean interface and fast downloads. Great for modpacks that are Modrinth-exclusive.
Step 1: Download Modrinth App
- Go to modrinth.com/app
- Download and install
- Log in with your Microsoft/Minecraft account
Step 2: Install a Modpack
- Click "Browse" → filter by Modpacks
- Find a modpack and click "Install"
- The app downloads the mod loader, all mods, and configurations
Step 3: Play
- Go to your Library
- Click Play on the modpack — launches directly, no extra steps
Method 3: Prism Launcher (Advanced)
Prism Launcher is an open-source launcher that supports modpacks from both CurseForge and Modrinth. Ideal for power users who want full control.
Step 1: Download Prism Launcher
- Go to prismlauncher.org
- Download and install for your OS
- Add your Microsoft/Minecraft account on first launch
Step 2: Install a Modpack
- Click "Add Instance"
- Select "Modrinth" or "CurseForge" tab
- Search for a modpack
- Select the version and click "OK"
Step 3: Play
- Double-click the modpack instance to launch
Allocating More RAM
Modpacks need more RAM than vanilla Minecraft. Most need 4-8 GB. Here's how to increase it:
- CurseForge App: Settings → Minecraft → Java Settings → increase "Allocated Memory"
- Modrinth App: Settings → Global Java Settings → increase RAM slider
- Prism Launcher: Settings → Java → Maximum Memory Allocation
Rule of thumb: Set RAM to what the modpack recommends. Don't allocate more than half your total system RAM.
Which Launcher Should I Use?
| Launcher | Best For | Modpack Sources |
|---|---|---|
| CurseForge App | Beginners, largest modpack library | CurseForge only |
| Modrinth App | Clean UI, fast downloads | Modrinth only |
| Prism Launcher | Power users, both platforms | CurseForge + Modrinth |
Troubleshooting
Modpack crashes on launch?
- Allocate more RAM — most crashes are caused by insufficient memory
- Make sure Java 21+ is installed for Minecraft 1.20.5+
- Update your graphics drivers
- See our Mod Crash Troubleshooting Guide
Modpack is slow or laggy?
- Many modpacks include performance mods already — check the mod list
- Lower render distance to 8-10 chunks
- Disable shaders if included
FAQ
Are modpacks free?
Yes. All modpacks on CurseForge and Modrinth are free. You only need a purchased copy of Minecraft Java Edition.
Can I add extra mods to a modpack?
Yes, but be careful — adding mods can cause conflicts. Add one at a time and test. Most launchers have an "Add Mod" button for each instance.
Can I play modpacks with friends?
Yes. You'll need a modded server running the same modpack version. Some modpacks include server files. Services like Aternos and Bisect Hosting offer one-click modpack server setup.
Do I need Forge or Fabric installed separately?
No. Modpack launchers install the correct mod loader automatically. You don't need to install Forge or Fabric manually.
