Naturalist Mod (1.20.1, 1.19.2) – The Wildlife is Here

Available for:FabricForge

Minecraft's vanilla animals feel static — they spawn, wander, and that's about it. Naturalist Mod changes that by introducing wildlife that actually behaves like wildlife. Bears protect their cubs and hunt deer, caterpillars form chrysalises that hatch into butterflies, and vultures circle overhead waiting to scavenge your drops. With over 7.9 million downloads, this mod by crispytwig has become one of the most popular creature additions available for both Forge and Fabric.

Key Features

  • Forest Wildlife: Bears roam as apex predators — leave their cubs alone and they'll ignore you, but they actively hunt deer. Deer graze on grass and flee when predators approach, creating a natural food chain dynamic.
  • Birds & Insects: Birds chirp from treetops and can be tamed with food. Butterflies pollinate flowers and crops, while caterpillars (bred from butterflies) crawl to nearby trees to form chrysalises. Fireflies light up forests, plains, and swamps at night with a beautiful glow effect.
  • Snails & Snakes: Snails wander the forest floor aimlessly — but watch your step, because jumping on them can crush them. Snakes serve as lower-tier predators, hunting the small animals that bears overlook.
  • Savanna Animals: Lions rule the savanna and hunt mobs at night — they will fight back if provoked. Giraffes can be ridden for 30 seconds after feeding them a Golden Apple. Elephants are peaceful unless attacked, while hippos guard waterways aggressively, attacking boats and nearby players.
  • Rhinos & Vultures: Rhinos are docile unless they have a baby nearby — approach the calf and they charge. Vultures fly overhead during the day and attack zombies at night. When you're low on health, vultures target you too, and they can steal items mid-flight — drop Rotten Flesh to trade for your gear back.

FAQ

Will bears attack me in Naturalist Mod?

Bears are passive unless provoked. If you stay away from their cubs and don't attack them, they'll leave you alone. However, they do actively hunt deer as part of the mod's predator-prey system.

Can you ride giraffes in Naturalist Mod?

Yes — feeding a giraffe a Golden Apple allows you to ride it for 30 seconds. This is a temporary mount rather than a permanent tame.

Is Naturalist Mod compatible with Forge and Fabric?

Yes, Naturalist supports both Forge and Fabric mod loaders. You'll need GeckoLib installed as a dependency regardless of which loader you use, and Fabric users will also need Fabric API.
