Species Mod (1.20.1, 1.19.2) – Fictional Mobs With Unique Functions

Available for:FabricForge

Minecraft's vanilla mob roster is fun, but it barely scratches the surface of what's possible. Species Mod fills that gap by introducing a roster of entirely original creatures — Wraptors, Birts, Limpets, Roombugs, and more — each with distinct behaviors, loot tables, and interactions that feel right at home in the base game. Created by ninnih_ and a dedicated team including Reda, Ninni, Noon, GLaDOS edition, and Bornulhu, Species has been downloaded over 3.7 million times on Modrinth, making it one of the most popular creature mods available for both Forge and Fabric.

Key Features

  • Wraptors — Large, neutral avian mobs that roam warped forests in striking turquoise plumage. They can be bred using Shroomlights, and their eggs are placeable blocks that must be left to hatch. Shearing their feathers sends them into a rage, so approach with caution.
  • Wraptor Coops — New structures that generate in warped forests. These coops are a reliable source of Wraptor Eggs and give players an alternative to breeding.
  • Cracked Wraptor Eggs — Use a hoe on a cracked Wraptor Egg to harvest a new food item. Eating it grants a unique effect, adding a practical reason to farm these mobs.
  • Birts — Hard-bodied bird-like creatures that live in hollowed-out birch tree dwellings. They communicate by sending remote signals to each other through an elongated method, and they return to their dwelling at night to lay Birt Eggs.
  • Limpets — Bipedal subterranean mollusks found underground with extremely tough shells that deflect any damage below 12 points. Use a pickaxe to crack their shells and harvest minerals — Fortune and Silk Touch enchantments affect the drops.
  • Roombugs — Drowsy arthropods found in savannas and badlands. Sleeping Roombugs can be mounted and ridden by entities, making them a charming if unconventional mode of transport.

FAQ

How do you tame or breed Wraptors in Species Mod?

Wraptors can be bred using Shroomlights. Feed two Wraptors a Shroomlight each, and they will produce a Wraptor Egg. The egg is a placeable block that needs time to hatch — you cannot speed up the process.

What is the best way to kill Limpets and get their drops?

You need to use a pickaxe, since Limpet shells deflect any attack dealing less than 12 damage. Hitting them with a pickaxe cracks the shell and lets you harvest minerals. Using Fortune increases mineral drops, while Silk Touch also affects the results.

Is Species Mod compatible with Forge and Fabric?

Yes, Species Mod supports both Minecraft Forge and Fabric (with Fabric API) for Minecraft versions 1.20.1 and 1.19.2. Download the correct file for your loader.
